In the past days of music promotion the only real way that artists could be signed is through sending demos to many record companies hoping and praying that one of them would give the tape a listen. Now the artist can blaze to fame without one record company hearing anything that the artist has done. great example of fame before being signed is Solja Boy, he shot to fame with a track that he produced himself and now is a platnium selling artist with a year or so of his video on youtube.com. Independent artist read on, i will give 5 great tips on how you should promote yourselfs, but before that make sure that you have a band name or a stage name and make every e-mail and username the same so to keep it easy to find your act.
1. E-Mail – Everyone who is promoting online (which is the best way to do it nowadays) needs an e-mail. Best to keep it based around you band name and based off a common server eg. hotmail, yahoo, gmail ect. this makes it very easy to remember. Then start passing the email around and also collecting e-mails from other people and adding them to e-mail lists so that you can keep people updated as you go.
2. Social Networks – Almost everyone has a Facebook or a myspace, if not get one. Your band can be promoted across the world and at the moment social networks are the in thing. Myspace will have a music profile setup, so that you can do what millions of other people do upload you music on that. you can also change the url of the site, pick something simple and easy to remember, so when you tell someone they can remember without writing it down. Plus you can use all social networks to make friend and advise when you are performing or you new track is uploaded for them to check out.
3. Online Videos – As i said at the start of this post, Soulja Boy made a video and a track and now is kinda loaded, and there is no reason why you cant do that. Youtube is a massive website and any video will have its own address with can be put in a link and embedded onto myspace or any blog site to get more views. Myspace also has its own video platform as well as AOL and Brightstar.
4. Blogs – Blogging sites such as this one (wordpress), Myspace and blogger to name a few are really good and letting people hear what you are saying. They can tell the world about whats going on from a day to day basis and gives you the fredom to write whatever you want to write about, also the fact that its your own words lets the reader (and hopefully fan) feel that they are closer to you. The more blogs you write the more chance that a future fan will stumble across you blogging site.
5. Podcasts – These are for downloading and are like radio shows which can be uploaded on garageband.com. these are like pre recorded audio blogs and are very handy especially if your making music. You can play snippets of your songs and have interviews with band members. It is like having you own radio show all to yourself. As a matter of fact im gonna go and get one right now.
These are 5 ways of promoting yourself in this age of web 2.0. but the posibilities are endless in the ways in which technology is changing. Use photoshop and make a logo, this can be the avatar of everything you do and make sure that you promote yourself using the above processes, this are just tools. You hav to do the promoting. These just make it easier. Laterz.
